EPILOGUE

‘WE HAVE MADE so much money for Peter’s charity!’ Sophie said over the music, and Will smiled at the way her eyes danced, the way her excitement brought her entire face alive. She squeezed his hand. ‘Isn’t that the most wonderful news?’

He brushed his lips across her cheek. ‘It is. And I’d be happy to donate more. I—’

She dropped his hand to point a finger at him, doing her best to look stern but failing miserably. ‘You’ve given more than enough, thank you very much.’

‘You’ve pulled off an amazing event.’ He slid an arm about her shoulders and pulled her in close, burying his face in her hair for a moment to fill his lungs with the scent of her, relishing the way she pressed against him. This—having Sophie close—made everything right. Everything. The joy, the exhilaration, the contentment, none of it had waned in the sixteen months they’d been married. He delighted in making her happy. He delighted in her.

He glanced down into perfect blue eyes—giving thanks as he did every day—and then nodded across the glittering ballroom filled with smiling beautiful people towards her parents. ‘Who’d have thought we’d live to see this day?’

Her mouth opened and closed and she gave a dazed shake of her head. ‘I still can’t believe that they’re not only speaking, but also actually working together. I know you’re behind this, you know?’

‘Not true. It was your father’s determination to make things right with you coupled with your mother’s immediate acceptance of the olive branch he proffered that set this in motion.’

After Will and Sophie had returned from their honeymoon, Lord Collingford had contacted Will begging to know how he could make things right with his daughter. Will had merely suggested that he and Sophie’s mother might consider working together to create a lasting memorial to Peter. The older man had immediately run with the idea. Hence, the establishment of the Peter Mitchell Foundation.

When her parents had presented the idea to Sophie she’d offered her services as an event planner immediately, and with a grace that had humbled Will. Her capacity for forgiveness and desire to make things better inspired him. The Peter Mitchell Foundation raised funds for medical supplies for Third World countries. It seemed a fitting memorial to a man who’d been so passionate about the cause.

‘Now…’ He turned Sophie to face him. ‘What was Mildred Campbell talking to you about so earnestly?’ He’d watched from the other side of the room, intrigued at the play of surprise, interest and delight that had flitted across Sophie’s face at the time. Mildred was the owner of Moreland Park Equestrian Centre—the one he’d taken Sophie to see that first week she’d been stuck at Ashbarrow. He hadn’t known Mildred would be here tonight.

‘Oh, now this is exciting! She wants us to go into business together. She’s been watching how well my equestrian holiday packages in Cornwall have been doing and wants me to create something along similar lines in Scotland. She’s offered me a partnership.
